The story continues after Aunt Grace finds and brings Fran home. A big twist in the plot appears here. Dr. Deern is tied to a chair, Dr. Oswald suddenly appears, shoots Fran, and reveals everything in the past. It turned out that Dr. Deern, who thought he was evil, had arrested Fran several times, and was a good person. He’s the only one who opposes Dr. Oswald’s plan and his crazy experiments. Fran’s abductions were actually to protect her from being held captive by Oswald.

Aunt Grace is evil, completely brainwashed by Oswald. Grace, like Fran’s own parents, shares the same evil belief as Oswald, that the fear and suffering of a child living in despair can create a monster of tremendous power. This power of it will help free the world from the “prison” of humanity and help them gain control of the world.

The head for this sick idea is none other than Oswald himself. Before he was in a wheelchair, he directly experimented on twin sisters Grace and Fran’s mother when they were young. But this experiment seems to have failed. Despite having repeatedly brainwashed, tortured, and abused the two sisters for a long time, the monster from both of their suffering was just Mabuka – Remor’s mother in the hell world. And this monster is not strong enough for him to rule the world. So Oswald continued to experiment with the F2 generation.

He married Fran’s mother and brainwashed both of them so that they both continued to torment Fran from birth until the age of 10. Accumulating suffering and resentment over many years of his childhood, Fran’s monster gradually grew into Remor’s half-human, half-skeleton form. It seems that the right person, the right brain, Remor is the super-powerful, super-destructive monster Oswald is looking for.

Oswald wants to erase everything to make it easier to manipulate the world. He ordered Remor to possess Fran’s body to kill her own parents, whom she both hated and loved. But at this very moment of killing, Remor suddenly gained some compassion from Fran, and Fran fell into a state of madness, half awake and half asleep. This was the moment that disrupted Oswald’s seemingly perfect plan.

Back to reality, once again Oswald wanted to wipe everything out with his own hands to monopolize the monster. He shot Oswald. Fortunately, Itward and Palontras came to her rescue, killing her aunt Grace and the insane Dr. Oswald. Dr. Deern was hypnotized so that he could no longer remember what happened. Then Fran, Mr. Midnight, Itward, and Palontras flew off to another world.

The story ends here. No one knows where the quartet has flown, nor does anyone know how the real world will change after that, what the future will be like with such a traumatized psychological trauma. The game ends with the words “Maybe I’m too young to know much, but I know one thing for sure: between guilt and pain, I have chosen happiness”.

My thoughts after playing 5 chapters of Fran Bow

Fran Bow’s 5 chapters end here. For some players, this is the obvious ending. Some more rational people, see this as open-ended. Even I was skeptical about it all even after playing and reading every explanation at the end of the game.

What makes me skeptical is that:

Firstly, I still think that the whole story and adventure are the product of little Fran’s imagination. You might think she’s normal, but from my observations so far, Fran has all the symptoms and manifestations of not one but several schizophrenia. Depressive disorder with constant fear and guilt, Obsessive-compulsive disorder when constantly haunted by a parallel world, sometimes dark, sometimes green, with all kinds of monsters and creatures strange, emotional disturbance with rapid changes from happy to sad and excited or agitated. It is these 3 evil mental illnesses that make Fran self-soothe, and help her overcome the pain of her past abuse and mistakes made by creating a series of imagined characters.

Second, the ending doesn’t sound normal at all. Maybe this is the developer’s metaphor to show us in the end: happiness is the most important thing we need to pursue, not power, strength, or suffering. This was probably a long adventure in her mind from the start.

To me, the whole story is just Fran and other good characters (like Itward), for example, struggling to cope with their own trauma. Each person in one way or another misunderstood themselves, found victims like themselves or deluded their minds, finally found the meaning of life deep within their souls and determined to regain the right to be happy.

Although the story is imaginary, what we can be sure of is the following 3 facts: The person you thought might be good to you or your only support turns out to be the bad guy (typically Fran’s aunt Grace) and vice versa (as in the case of Dr. Deern who thought evil turned out to be good people).

The second real event is the crazy research idea of Dr. Oswald. Itward or Mabuka is not a monster but maybe the evil part arising from the days of the extreme suffering of a human. As in real life, he may have taken advantage of this “psychic” and chaotic moment of “test subjects” to turn these suffering people into the world’s most insane cold-blooded assassins (like Aunt Grace, Fran’s mother, and the little girl herself).

The third real event is about Fran killing her parents by herself, ending her childhood with severe abuse. This was true even if it was justified at the time that Fran was possessed by Remor – her own suffering. It was at this moment that Fran was a true assassin, the only successful experiment of Dr. Oswald.

In general, the game is still very impressive and worth playing. Difficulty and horror are sometimes uneven between chapters. I think that Fran Bow Chapter 2, and Chapter 3 is a bit long and lacks drama. The most exciting, most mind-provoking part is Chapter 1 and Chapter 4. And Chapter 5 is to reveal all the hiddenness of the whole story, explains everything that happened, and brings the ending for the characters.
