The story

To start the main plot in Ghost Case, we have to go back a little 20 years ago. At that time in Hidden Town, there was a terrible murder. Everyone got goosebumps at the cold-blooded cruelty of the murderer. However, many years have passed, and the killer has not yet been named, evil is still out there somewhere, it’s just that it’s been so long that people gradually stop talking about it.

Back in the present time, the main character in Ghost Case is Detective Ren Larsen. While working at the office one evening, he received a series of strange messages supposedly sent from the other world.

Connecting those messages, Larsen realized that there seemed to be messages sent from the souls of the victims in the same case, the case that happened 20 years ago was mentioned in the name. They cannot rest in peace because the evil man is still living comfortably outside the law, because he has not yet been paid for his crimes. They want to be heard. And decided to put all his remaining strength into sending a message to Larsen.

Knowing this, Ren Larsen immediately had many uneasy premonitions. He learned about this case from an elderly colleague. However, looking back now, along with these messages, it seems much darker and more complicated. But Ren still decided to reopen the case file, starting the investigation again from scratch in the hope of catching the real villain and helping those angry souls truly rest in peace.

Without having to follow any order, Ghost Case lets players freely go everywhere in Hidden Town, through many confusing areas in search of clues. Difficulties pile up because the incident happened so long ago. Some witnesses died, and some no longer remember much about the crime. As for the related locations, there are not many related traces left. If there are any clues, they are extremely faint and almost impossible to use because of the traces of time and disturbance.

When playing Ghost Case, if you don’t know where to start, search right from where you are. Although the clues are faint, luckily there is always a magical connection between things and events that come one after another. This fragile connection is what makes you able to slowly trace the story.

Does it need to play the previous 3 parts?

Ghost Case is the 4th part of the Hidden Town puzzle game series. There are no rules stating that to play Ghost Case, you must play and understand all the stories of the previous 3 parts. But as said, there is a connection between the big and small clues you bring back. These connections are largely related to the previous two parts, The Girl in the Window and Haunted Laia.

So, to understand all the events, the meaning of the clues, and the correlation between the characters in Ghost Case, it is best to play through the two games mentioned above. But it’s not required. If you play Ghost Case just because you love its graphics and interesting couplet system, then there’s no need to play any of the previous games.

The key is that you have to figure out how to use which items to combine or interact or bond with the newly found items so that they become a meaningful chain of clues.
